SPELLING & GRAMMAR

Does your student need to refresh or improve their grammar? Would they like to use commas and semicolons with confidence? I will work on the eight parts of speech, the structure of sentences, and the standard punctuation marks. Students will identify and fix common problems in writing and review some fundamental principles of grammar including parts of speech; sentence types; sentence analysis; simple, compound, and complex sentences; subject-verb agreement; pronoun usage; punctuation; and avoidance of fragments, run-ons, and other errors. I also help students brush up for the PSAT and SAT standardized tests by providing tips and strategies for the multiple-choice questions on writing style and mechanics.

HOMEWORK & STUDY HABITS

Making the jump from one grade level or school to another can be overwhelming for many students, not only with certain subject matter but with organization of folders and backpacks as well. In addition to assisting with general homework for all grade levels, I also help students navigate these transitions by teaching them valuable organization tools and strategies.

THE COLLEGE ESSAY

How do students to describe themselves in 500 words? Set themselves apart from the rest of the applicants? Write about their dreams without using clichés? I help students compose a well rounded college admissions essay. They will reflect on their own experiences, values, and relationships. These reflections will become the basis for a number of drafts that tell their unique story. We’ll refine these drafts into a personal narrative for the Common Application, an activities statement, and other supplemental essays. We will also read and discuss actual narratives presented to colleges for their review. Together, we will brainstorm ideas, and think carefully about what they want their composition to convey about their personal history so that it that reflects who they are, what they care about, and the dreams they have for their future.
